The Essential Practice Model
At TKC, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to thrive in an environment that maximises engagement, understanding and progress. That is why the Essential Practice Model (EPM) forms the foundation of all our teaching and learning practices.
The EPM is a structured, research-informed approach with its foundations in the Accelerated Learning Cycle. It is designed to make learning active, purposeful, and memorable. It ensures that lessons are not just about delivering content, but about creating experiences where students connect ideas, apply knowledge, and develop skills for life.
What is the Accelerated Learning Cycle?
The cycle is built around four key stages:
1. Connect Students link new learning to prior knowledge and real- world contexts.
This stage builds relevance and curiosity, helping learners see why the topic matters.
2. Activate Engages students through exploration and discovery
Activities spark interest and encourage active participation, setting the foundation for deeper learning.
3. Demonstrate Students show understanding and apply skills.
Through discussion, problem-solving, and practical tasks, learners prove what they know.
4. Consolidate Embedding learning through reflection and practice.
Ensures knowledge sticks by reviewing, summarizing, and applying concepts in different ways.
Why it matters
- Consistency and Clarity Every lesson follows a clear structure, helping students feel confident and focused.
- Active Learning Students are involved in their learning journey, not passive recipients of information.
- Deeper Understanding By connecting, activating, demonstrating and consolidating, knowledge moves from short-term to long-term mastery.
- Inclusive and Adaptive: The Ordinarily Available Provision (OAP) in our school is underpinned by the EPM ensuring that inclusive strategies are embedded within high-quality teaching. This provides a structured approach to planning, delivering, and reviewing learning, which supports teachers in anticipating and removing barriers for all students, including but not limited to those with Special Educational Needs (SEND). By grounding The OAP in this framework, we create a consistent, responsive environment where targeted support builds on strong universal practice, promoting equity, independence, and high expectations for every learner.
Our Commitment
At TKC, the Essential Practice Model is more than a framework. It shapes how we plan, teach and assess, ensuring that every student experiences high-quality learning every day.
